HOLY CRAP!

I remember that book, I remember it! I read that book when I was in like the 3rd grade or something like that. I remember reading a lot of his books.

You know that would really make me look like a fool if I'm thinking of a different book.

I guess we'll never know...

I want to see the movie first before making any decision, but odds are on Gene Wilder. I will say if anyone can pull it off, it is Burton and Depp.

Mrs. Twit...who, as her name implies was a Twit...had a glass eye. Every now and again, she'd drop it into her husband's beer stein, giving him quite a start when he got to the bottom. She'd just cackle and say, "I'm ALWAYS watching you!"

*evil grin* That the book you're thinking of, PieXas?

I don't believe you can judge a movie just "on the trailer"
I agree partially, but I disagree that you can never tell by a trailer. After many years one learns what one likes and dislikes and assuming the trailer isn't just an 8 second flash-card ad, trailers often make it fairly obvious whether a movie will fit into those likes and dislikes enough to either pass in the theater or to give it a chance. And the more familiar you are with a director/actor combo, the more likely such an assesment is to be correct...for you individually.

I'm familiar with both Burton/Depp enough to know that about 50% of the time, they make films that I'm not keen on style-direction-story-acting wise. They go off/pick films (together or independantly) in strange & bizarre directions that I have not liked cinematically. While this is what makes them both so creatively interesting, that they aren't afraid to try new stuff, I've become good at judging their projects in terms of my personal likes and dislikes, given a long enough trailer or enough other info sources.

I know this cause eventually my husband rents them (he rents almost everything from good to C grade crap *rolls eyes*) and I usually sit down and watch them then....and I haven't been wrong yet in my assumption of personal tastes re: these two yet. Big Fish looked awful to me...and to me it was. Pirates of the Carribean looked unappealing to my tastes....and it was. etc. CFactory gives me the same feeling, and thus my interest immediately waned.

I love the book and love the original film. I will watch this film to see if its more true to the book, but no way Johnny Depp could ever replace Gene Wilder. He is Willy Wonka. Johnny Depp... well he looks weird, but not zany. Which is what Willy Wonka is.

I want someone to make a film of "The Glass Elevator"! Sure its not as good as Charlie, but it would complete the series... come on guys!

I am very much looking forward to seeing the new one. So far as I can tell, I think it will be great. As long as these new Oompa Loompas don't do the Macarena (watch the original, you'll see), I think it's a step up.

Edward Chocolate-Hands and the Sleepy Hollow Factory? For me, J.Depp plays his T.Burton films the same. Good actor, just not very much left for Tim to find by way of different.

Gene Wilder aside, the original Veruca would be hard to upstage. "I want and Oompa Loompa and I want it now!" Campy classic that should've been left alone - despite the author family's distaste for it. (Imagine a remake of RHPS... just wouldn't be the same.)

anyone tries to remake RHPS and I'll force stockings down their throat. and thats me being nice

And Oompa Lumpas ruled in teh first one... although I'm hoping the River Ride is a little more kid friendly... on my most recent watching of the film, I noticed that you do, in fact, see a chicken being beheaded in the background. I always hated that part, even as a kid and now i know why!

Like Swampgirl said, I am also looking forward to seeing this movie. I enjoyed Depp (more than I thought) in Pirates of the Caribbean.

I'm not a fan of some of Tim Burton's work (Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood) but am a rabid fan of others (Batman, Big Fish, Mars Attacks!). So I will either love or hate this film most likely.

The original was a musical, but a very campy musical. I believe this new one will also be a 'sortof' musical, but more in the way that Addams Family was a musical. Songs will be sung, but they will be used to accentuate action or to fulfill a plot point. Not as a Saturday Morning Special, like the original movie's songs.

I will be seeing it the weekend it comes out, so I would be glad to come back to this thread or another after that time, and comment on my opinions.

By the previews I'm not very excited with this remake, though I will see it just to see Burton's take on things. So given first impressions, Wilder has it but I wouldn't count Depp out yet. He has surprised me before.
